The Hunt Pack by Samuel Alexander White
I picked up 'The Hunt Pack' by Samuel Alexander White on a whim, and I'm so glad I did. It's one of those books that starts with a bang and doesn't let up. The author, who seems to be a bit of a mystery themselves, has crafted a modern fantasy that feels both fresh and familiar in the best way.
The Story
We follow Silas, a man with a past he's running from, who lives off the grid. His life changes one night when he stumbles upon a brutal fight in an alley. He intervenes, saving a woman named Kaelin from a creature straight out of a nightmare. Turns out, Kaelin is part of the Hunt Pack, a hidden organization that protects humanity from things that go bump in the night. They see something in Silas—a natural instinct for the hunt—and forcibly recruit him. The book follows his brutal training, his clashes with the Pack's strict rules, and the growing mystery of why these monsters are suddenly becoming more aggressive. Silas has to navigate old rivalries within the Pack while figuring out who he can trust, all before a looming threat they call the 'Great Howl' arrives.
Why You Should Read It
For me, the heart of this book is Silas. He's not your typical chosen-one hero. He's grumpy, scarred, and deeply reluctant. Watching him slowly, and I mean *very* slowly, start to care about this weird, violent new family is incredibly satisfying. The action scenes are crisp and terrifying—you can almost hear the snarls and feel the tension. But it's the quieter moments between the hunts, where the Pack members just exist together, that really build the world. It asks fun questions about what makes a monster, and whether duty is more important than freedom.
Final Verdict
This is the perfect book for anyone who loves urban fantasy but wants a grittier, more grounded take. If you enjoyed the team dynamics of shows like 'Supernatural' or the hidden-world feel of early Dresden Files, but wished it had a protagonist who was less of a wizard and more of a scrappy survivor, you'll love 'The Hunt Pack.' It's a fast, fun, and surprisingly emotional story about finding where you belong, even if that place is covered in monster blood. A solid and addictive debut.
